By working together, hosts and guests can create a truly inclusive and enjoyable New Year's Eve party where everyone feels valued and celebrated.
Here are two last-minute checklists for hosts and attendees to help ensure a successful and accessible New Year’s Eve gathering.
For the host:
- Provide a quiet / safe room—Loud music, lots of conversations, and bright lights can be overwhelming for some people, especially those with sensory sensitivities like autism or anxiety. Introverts will appreciate a chance to recharge before rejoining the festivities. Some guests may need a moment of privacy for a phone call or a quiet conversation. For your quiet / safe zone:
- Choose a low-traffic area like a spare bedroom or a sunroom.
- Include comfortable seating and soft lighting.
- Include signage to let guests know the space is available and where.
- If you want to include fireworks, provide a video and, depending on the guest's preference, lower or turn off the sound.
- Avoid bright or flashing / twinkling lights—Set holiday tree lights and other lighted decorations to steady mode rather than blinking, and opt for soft, ambient lighting for the overall environment.
- Decorate thoughtfully—Choose decorations that won't block walkways or cause anyone to trip. Keep walkways clear for comfortable and easy navigation throughout the party area.
- Look at every aspect of your party, including entranceways, noise, lighting levels, and decor, from the perspective of disability inclusion. If you're not sure, don't be afraid to ask. It all comes down to communication and understanding, not just assuming.
For the attendee:
- Prepare your personal aids—Charge and check that your wheelchair, walker, hearing aids, or other assistive devices are working properly. Don't forget to bring chargers and extra batteries, if needed.
- Ask about a quiet zone—If sensory overload is a concern, ask the host if there is a designated quiet zone. If you have them, bring a pair of noise-canceling headphones, just in case.
- Manage your energy—Pace yourself throughout the evening, take breaks when necessary, and prioritize activities you enjoy.
- Dietary considerations—Check if the host offers a variety of food options to accommodate dietary restrictions. If unsure, consider bringing your own snacks or drinks.
From the team at DubBot, here’s wishing you and yours a very Happy and Prosperous New Year! 🥳
