AAA Contrast - What Are We Checking For?

Hands Up! DubBot now checks for WCAG 1.4.6 Contrast (Enhanced) Level AAA!!

Ok, that’s great, but what’s the difference between WCAG 1.4.3 AA and WCAG 1.4.6 AAA?

WCAG 1.4.3 AA sets the contrast ratio for text and images of text to a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1, with exceptions for large-scale text, incidental text, and logos.

WCAG 1.4.6 AAA sets the contrast ratio for text and images of text to a contrast ratio of at least 7:1, with exceptions for large-scale text, incidental text, and logos.

The contrast ratio of 7:1 was chosen for level AAA because the 7:1 level generally compensates for the loss in contrast sensitivity experienced by users with vision loss equivalent to approximately 20/80 vision and users with low vision who do not use assistive technology. This ratio also provides contrast enhancement for color deficiency.

DubBot's updated checker now verifies the higher contrast ratio. While testing content for contrast at the AAA level may appear excessive to some, it ensures that some website users with specific visual impairments or color deficiencies can perceive and comprehend your content.

We realize that the standard level of conformance is currently set at WCAG 2.1, AA. Additionally, we know that only a few of our clients test their content at the higher AAA level. To accommodate this, DubBot has made contrast testing for WCAG 1.4.6 AAA an optional feature. DubBot account admins can ignore these checks at either the site or account level.
